I take him out and he comes back in to pee on furniture

7/27/04 Most males do it to mark their territory. Do you have another dog or cat in the house? That might be one reason he is doing this. Good luck Carrol Carrol

9/15/04 Housebreaking dachshunds can be a chore. But it’s not as hard as it seems. I use housebreaking pads. I teach my dogs that they can use either the pads or go outside. Some people prefer to just have them go outside. That’s fine but if you start with the pads it just makes it so much easier. Never physically punish one for relieving themselves where you don’t want them too (I found that the traditional butt swat doesn’t work with dachshunds like it does on other breeds) just verbally shame them (When you shame them do it in a low "I'm so disappointed in you" tone like they have just completely ruined your life). Then ignore them for a bit. Dachshunds HATE being ignored. Absolutely HATE it! When they go in the right place (either outside or on the pee pad) just lavish the praise and hug them and make a big deal over them for a bit. They will get the point. I can house break one in a month or less doing it this way, even if they are "marking" their territory. Mac Note: If you h Sussie

9/15/04 Note: If you have a male, and you are using housebreaking ("pee pads") pads, give them a box or a milk jug (I use a bleach jug that’s filled with water so its weighted. The plastic is easy to wash off) or something to "hike" their leg on (once they have reached the "hiking" age). Males hike their legs, its part of nature. He can't help it, and it cruel to get after him for doing it. But its not cruel to teach him when he can hike and can't. LOL! Sussie

12/2/04 I agree with Sussie on the Milk Jug - some pet catalogs have some really cute replicas of fire Hydrants, you may want to pick one of those up and set a little area up for your fellow to do his business. You can always throw it in the dishwasher at the end of the day and wash it alone with a little bleach. Sherry
