How do you tell when dogs are in labor and what is the length of labor before the first puppy is born?

Sorry for delay in responding to your question. Just now received it.
A dogs temp will drop to the 98's around 24 hours before labor begins. A normal temp for a dog is 101 degrees. If temp ever drops below 98 seek your vet opinion immediately.
It is uncertain how long it will be before first pup is born. Some dogs go through the dilating process quitely and others will remake their beds over and over till pushing begins.
