My female dashie had four happy, healthy pups 5 weeks ago. She has been a really perfect mom since birth, but now she has suddenly, overnight, decided to stop feeding them. She runs away from them if they try to latch. Is this normal? I have tried them on soft puppy food and they are OK with it, but they still prefer moms milk!Any advice? How often and how much puppy food should I feed them? Do I need to give them a milk substitute or just water?

10/9/08 All Dachshund Moms naturally begin weaning at 5 weeks. You should be introducing the puppies to soft and then dry puppy food and have them completely weaned by 6-7 weeks. We begin letting puppies stay away from Mom at this time. So...sounds like everything is going according to natures plan! Have fun! Poop is just beginning! Gina
