A Visitor asked the following question on 9/4/2005
My three year old female mini-daschund has had two very healthy litters with our 4 year old male. We are going to breed her again this year when she goes into heat. At what age should we stop breeding her?

9/4/05 Breeding is a huge responsibility. If you have bred her twice, did you keep any of the puppies? If not, why? If you did not like any of her previous puppies enough to keep them, why breed her again? What is your motivation for breeding a litter? Do you show or do performance/field trial events? Do you know how your dogs compare to the breed standard? Are you willing to deal with the heartbreak of a defective puppy....or a distraught owner when they are told by their vet that their young dachshund they purchased from you now has epilepsy, or Cushing's Disease, or any number of the genetic health problems common to this breed. Do you know the health issues behind your pedigree, and are you willing to take puppies back at any time in their life, if they are not healthy or simply need re-homing? I know an extremely ethical breeder who has been in this breed for several decades. He just took back a 14 year old dog of his breeding...the owner died and the dog had nowhere to really go, so re Kristin

9/4/05 I was cut off...here is the rest of my reply: I know an extremely ethical breeder who has been in this breed for several decades. He just took back a 14 year old dog of his breeding...the owner died and the dog had nowhere to really go, so relatives contacted the breeder and he did the right thing. He will have this old dog for the rest of its life. This is the hallmark of an ethical breeder. So many dachshunds are churned out every year for the wrong reasons...are you sure you want to breed her again and again and contribute to the issue of dachshunds in breed rescue? Have a firm breeding plan in mind when and if you do breed a litter....and if you are not making a serious contribution to the breed and can't realistically think about taking any or all of the puppies back at any time in their lives for whatever reason, do your bitch a favor and spay her. It will help prevent mammary tumors and end the risk of pyometra. Kristin

11/21/05 As previous reply said, breeding is a big responsiblity. I would never breed a female pass age 6-7 years and only then if she had always been a super producer and I liked her pups and really needed one to keep. But if you already have a pup out of her then I would probably stop by 5 years. Spay her for her own health and protection. She has done a service for you already, do her a service now and retire her if she is in this age frame. Judy
