Progressive Retinal Atrophy (PRA)is a genetic disorder which causes the retina of the eye to degenerate slowly over time,resulting in declining vision and eventually blindness. The disease gene must be inhereted from each parent to cause disease in their puppies. Wilson is a PRA carrier (September 05'), Echo is also a PRA carrier which means they have one disease gene and one normal gene. Siku, Dolly and Maya are all Non Carrier PRA (result of Clear to Clear breeding), meaning they have no disease gene. Knowing whether a parent is a Non Carrier, Carrier or Affected is very important as you can prevent further offspring from becoming Affected by PRA. It takes two diseased genes to develope PRA. Wilson's OFA reading for his hips is normal graded good. His OFA # is AE-730G76M-VPI. Wilson is a PRA Carrier, tested Nov, 2008. Optigen Accession #: 08-111165.
Maya is PRA Non-carrier, tested May, 2007. Optigen Accession #: 07-3907. Maya's OFA reading for her hips is normal graded excellent. Her OFA # is AE-797E24F-VPI.
Both Star and Siku's hips were X-rayed and submitted to OFA on August 31st, 2007. We are awaiting determination by OFA. Both Star And Siku had an OFA reading for hips of normal graded fair.
Optigen test have been submitted on Neva and Victor 6/18/08 and we are awaiting results. Neva and Victor are both Carriers for PRA.
