Progressive Retinal Atrophy (PRA) Information
The American Eskimo Dog is subject to late onset PRA. Generally if this condition is to present itself it occurs when the dog is between 3 and 5 years of age. Your Eskie’s sire and dam where examined by a board-certified ophthalmologist and were rated as having Normal eyes at the time of the examination. This examination occurred no more than one year prior to the breeding of this litter. Your puppy’s sire and dam have been OptiGen tested. This is a blood test to determine if a dog is Pattern A (will NOT develop PRA and will NOT pass the gene onto its progeny), Pattern B (this dog is called a “Carrier.” This dog will NOT develop PRA but can pass the gene onto its progeny; Pattern C (this dog is considered to be “Affected” and will develop PRA sometime during it’s lifetime and will pass the gene onto its progeny). Your puppy’s dam is Pattern A; its sire is Pattern B. This means that your puppy will not develop PRA, but if to be used in a breeding program should be tested to determine if s/he is Pattern A or Pattern B.
