Sussex Spaniel Information
The Sussex Spaniel is a short-legged, stocky flushing dog that originated in Sussex County, England, in the 1800s. It is one of the AKC's oldest registered breeds, and also one of the rarest of the sporting breeds. The Sussex Spaniel fell out of popularity with many hunters because it is a slower, more methodical flushing dog that is suited to thick brush or a slower-moving hunter. For experienced dog owners who have previously owned beagles or other 'hard-headed' dogs, the Sussex is trainable and reliable. Novice dog owners should take their Sussex Spaniel pup to Puppy Kindergarten, Beginner Obedience, and Canine Good Citizen courses in the first year of life. It is important to keep Sussex Spaniels well-socialized with people and other dogs during its first year to avoid anti-social behavior throughout life. Sussex have very few health problems, but like all breeds and species, are experiencing more cancers. Environmental exposure to lawn chemicals and pesticides should be avoided by Sussex Spaniels and their owners.
