Good afternoon!
Fredericksburg, VA has gone to the dogs!!! The Fredericksburg-Rappahannock Izaak Walton League, along with Lionhearts, Inc., a local non profit animal welfare organization, is bringing Fredericksburg Dog Mart (Dog Mart) back to the city. And we would like you to be a part of the excitement.
The traditional Fredericksburg Dog Mart was started in 1698 to foster trade and goodwill with local Native Americans. This makes it the oldest dog related event in the country and, therefore, older than the country itself !! During those early days, Indians traded furs, gold and handcrafts in exchange for much coveted hunting dogs. Over time, the Dog Mart became more of a dog show that featured a wide variety of dog related demonstrations and local culture. Today's Dog Mart will include most of the popular events of the past, and importantly, the event will now showcase an exhibition of dogs and cats for adoption by area animal rescue organization. In the 1950s, with nationally publicized stories by Time and National Geographic Magazines, the Dog Mart drew over 12,000 people to t he area. The event moved to Spotsylvania County in the 1970s, but this year, we’re bringing the Dog Mart and its history back to Fredericksburg!
The Fredericksburg Dog Mart will take place on Saturday, October 3, 2009, from 10AM to 8PM at the Fredericksburg Fairgrounds. During the event, visitors will have the opportunity to observe a reenactment of the original Dog Mart, along with living history demonstrations by the Patawomeck Indians, historical displays of all kinds, local and military police, K-9 unit demonstrations, herd and retriever demonstrations, dog breed show and judging, Frisbee throwing dog acrobatics, storytelling, blues and bluegrass jam tents, classic cars and so much more. As part of the day long events of the Dog Mart, we’ll hold the 1st Annual Fur Ball. Come on out and dance with your favorite dog. Steve Jarrell and the Sons of the Beach Band will headline this year’s dance. This is a family event the entire community will enjoy.

This year, the proceeds from the Dog Mart will benefit the Virginia Kincheloe low cost Spay and Neuter clinic in their efforts to obtain a mobile unit.

There is still some booth space available for rescues and shelters, Vendors and Public Service Organizations. For more information, go to

Thanks and come out and enjoy a dog-gone great day with us on October 3rd, 2009!
