I have two Irish Setters, a male and female. These dogs are usually very well behaved, but my male, Diggery, has a really innate habit of pawing at everyone. I like to have the dogs sleep with me, but I'm afraid he'll paw me in the face or eye. I can't seem to get him to stop. Any suggestions?

Irish Setters do like to use their 'hands' for getting attention... they're a little like Boxers in that regard. I taught both of my Irish to "shake" and then "no shake". This puts a command and a word to their behavior. Because they like to give their paws so easily anyways, teaching them to "shake" was very easy. Once that command was fully established, I added "no shake" and the connection was slowly made. Now, for the most part, they paw at me very little. Usually only when they feel completely ignored. And they are much more gentle

Good luck,

Teach them a command that will make them stop pawing. Let them know that you do not like what they are doing but do not yell or scold them. Reward them when they got it right. Here are something that might be useful for you:
I hope that will be of help.
