Hi Guys:

Some people think that the protein level in puppy food should be at 29, some are saying it should be 14%, and other are saying that it doesn't matter.
Could you please tell me what should be the correct level of protein in puppy food.

Thank you,

It depends on the breed and what your breeder reccommends. I am very careful not to feed my Dobes anything higher than 26% -- ideally I use a food with 22-24% protein and about 12-14% fat. This is dry food by the way. I always start puppies on adult food and suppliment things in if needed.

We raise and train German Shorthaired Pointers and our vets recommend that our puppies are off puppy food with high protein contents by the time they are 8 weeks old. So we start switching them to adult food so they are completely switched by 8 weeks old. They did a study several years ago and I don't remember how many pups were included, but lets use 10 and they split them into 2 groups of 5 pups. Group one was fed puppy food until they were a year old and Group two were fed adult food until they were a year old. At a year they x-ray'd their joints and they already had bone degeneration happening. This is for medium to large breed dogs. So that is the policy we go by.
