I'm doing a college course in Canine Behaviour and Psychology and am stuck on my Module project and am hoping someone can help me?
The question is 'A pet bitch has just had her first litter of puppies.
After a few hours she leaves the whelping box and refuses to return to it or be involved with the puppies.
Research and give possible reasons for this behaviour?
Any help or links to any websites would be great?
Thank you

The first thing you look for is a medical reason for this behavior The bitch could be ill- I have had this happen in a bitch with mastitis and in another bitch who developed post delivery pyometra. It also could happen if the pups are ill- many times a bitch will not care for pups that are going to die for whatever reason. The second thing you look for is the environment- the place where the pups and mom are kept should feel very secure to the mom- quiet and away from the normal traffic of the household.

The third is that the mom just doesn't know what those little things are and nursing can be painful on engorged teats. Not all dogs have an immediate maternal urge and only see the pups as the reason for pain and discomfort. In almost all cases you can then train the bitch to care for her newborns but it will take a lot of time and effort on the part of the pet owner.

A pet dog raised as a pet may not have the instincts.. or think of themselves as a dog enough to want to raise and care for pups..

Failure of mothering instict.. is a highly inherited trait.. so it is believed that there are specific genes that influance this..

Medical caused.. early sighn of metritis, mastitis, and milk fever will someitmes cause a mom to loose intrest in pups..

As far as websites
