My brother-in-law loves the Whippet breed and has had his heart broken far too many a time with multiple dogs, of other various breeds, passing away on him, since country roads are turned into speed lanes by pedal-to-the-medal drivers..."( so, we're looking for a dog that would not be too keen to get near moving vehicles/the road, but would love following my brother-in-law around the greenhouse biz all day long, not being too yappy or aggressive with the vehicles that do amble up the driveway to drop off loads of plants and such. His wife would prefer that the dog be comfortable living outdoors (large yardage/acres to run around on) and there are two little kids, a five-year old boy who loves adventure and pirates and a complete go-go-go personality, whereas their daughter is friendly but with more of a cat-like personality, as in needing her own space and time and not needing to be touched all the time. Would the Whippet breed, preferably welcomed (eagerly!) into the family as a puppy, be a good breed for such a dynamic in the family members? Would really like to find the closest kindred-kind of fit between the personality of the dog and the fun-loving but orderly nature of the family...who will all get super-duper attached to this puppy the minute they lay eyes on it. ") And it can't dig up plants or knock over pots in the greenhouse or get scared of new workers people around. Whew! Long question! Anticipate a probably shorter reply, eh? 11/1/06 I currently have three whippets and a big ole lab that thinks he is a whippet. Whippets are smart, travel well, love children and their own personal humans, prefer to sleep with a human, lay on the couch or bed under a comforter, and clean themselves like a cat and cuddle like one. They are healthy and sturdy little dogs. I have had several whippets that lived with my family until they were more than 16 years old. If you spend the time to train to fit the family with all working together with commands etc and obedience they will do just what you want them to do. My whippets have a vocabulary of more than 50 commands that they know and use. I use a lot of hand signals with them too. They do need to be confined in a safe warm or Air conditioned enclosed place when they are not with their humans. They get lonely, and will be destructive when bored or scared. My three adult Whippets have the run of my house and do just fine. They have lots of toys and each other to keep them Tina Rae
