My Shih-tzu "Barney" loves to plays with stuffed animals/dog toys, but everytime he plays with them he ends up shreding them apart riping the noses off and eveytime he plays with the he crys very loudly and licks whatever the toy is.He is a very gentle dog but he gets very protective of his toys. Why is that?

My first question, How old is Barney? How old was he when he was taken away from his mother? And how many puppies were in his litter? His shredding his toys there are a couple of reasons he may be doing it, as far as him talking and licking his toys, well he loves them very much and he just happens to be a very vocal little guy. His protectiveness over his toys and him shredding them sounds like he did not get the socialization skills needed from his mother. That is why I asked the questions earlier. Having those answers would be very helpful in determining why he is probably reacting in the manner he is. Let me know those answers and I may be able to help you change a bit of his behavior.
