I recently purchased a mini bull terrier he died at 8 months due to kidney failure is this common?

No, it is not common in Mini Bulls to die this early for any reason. My guess is either he came from an unethical breeder who wasn't screening for the health of their breeding stock, or that your dog had the misfortune of getting into something (such as antifreeze or another poison) that caused his kidneys to shut down. Whatever the reason, I'm very sorry for your loss.
