I would love to start breeding and raising Labs with my male and female. He is our house baby(17mon.) and she is our yard baby(3yrs.). I'm not exactly for sure on how to get started as far as a kennel, pedigrees,vet certifications,etc. Any help you can give will be greatly appreciated. Thanks. K.Capshaw

The best place to start this is at the AKC website. THey have lots of useful information including a list of breeders. Most breeders will be happy to give you any information you need. To start a kennel you need a location(your home), a bitch and a dog with dissimilar pedigrees that you like. You should have the bitch checked out with your vet and the dog. You should make sure that the parents are not affected with heritable diseases.( check websites for Optigen, CERF and OFA), heart and othe defects. You will need some advice about how to whelpo the litter and your vet can help. As far as pedigrees yo uneed to be sure that your dogs are healthy and that they are what you like, winning championships is not hereditary, only conformation traits are.
