Has anyone ever experienced a puppy with an umbilical hernia. I have a 5 month old puppy that was shipped from a foreign country that has one the size of my baby finger. My doctor has suggested that I get him neutered and take care of the hernia at the same time. The breeder doesn't understand why it is considered so serious in the United States and is telling me not to get it surgically repaired. I have been told that this type of hernia is hereditary and that he should not be shown or bred. Please help!

3/4/05 There are true umbilical hernias, and small "bubbles" or a small area where there was never complete closure. They are different. True hernias are considered hereditary...and the dog should not be bred. Are you sure it is a true hernia ? Betty
