A Visitor asked the following question on 11/19/2005
My 2 1/2 year old italian greyhound has suddenly broken out with ehat looks like hives. The bumps began on her back. They are rather large. They come and go and seem to come up right after she goes out in the cold (40 deg, F) and subside after warming up for a 1/2 hour. This has been happening for 2 days. The end of the 1st day her front feet swelled up and itched her. The second day her face and eye swelled. She is on Benydril but it does not seem to help. I can not see any thing in her life that has changed such as food or exposure to chemicals. We thought she was perhaps allergic to fleas but don't see any. She has had fleas before and never broke out with hives. Has anyone seen this in other Italian Greyhounds?

12/9/05 I can't imagine what it would be. I work at a vet clinic and we see all sorts of skin problems and irritations but never have had one with bumps afer being out in the cold! I would say there has to be some chemical on the sidewalk or somewhere to melt snow maybe? Food allergies and flea allergies are the most common types. But dogs do have all types of environmental allergies just like we humans do. Gayle Gayle

12/6/06 I.G's are very sensitive to many environmental or chemical elements. I would talk to your vet about putting her on steroids for a short period of time along with the Benedryl. What dog food are you using. She is definitly having an allergic reaction and yes I have seen this before. If you need help...give me a call. Shirley
