Just wondering how old a male should be before he is fertile and ready to breed? We have a seven month old that is already interested in our female? Can they produce a litter?

11/1/05 Can they produce a litter, yes. Should they, no. Please, please, please do not breed your dogs yet. Any age male can seem interested in a female, puppies do engage in sexual play. Not only is he not physically mature enough at 7 months old, he is not mentally mature enough. Rule of thumb for breeding is 2 years old, especially for larger breeds. Also, temperment and health testing should be done before breeding any dog, regardless of the breed. Please research the genetic diseases and disabilities related to your breed and have your dogs tested for them before proceeding. I do not think anyone would want to bring a diseased or disabled pup into the world, especially when a simple test could have prevented it. Jennifer
