1/30/05 AKC stands for American Kennel Club and they are located in Raleigh, NC. It is the kennel club that dogs are registered with in the U.S. An AKC registered dog or litter of pups only means that BOTH parents are purebred animals (not mixed breeds). It in no way indicates the health of the puppy, whether or not the parents have had health screenings done (eyes, hips, thyroid, patella, etc.), or have good temperaments, and is not an indication of the quality of the parents or puppy. It does mean an AKC registered dog can compete in AKC events as long as the dog does not have a LIMITED registration (this will be marked on the registration papers). If a dog who is registered with AKC is bred to another dog of the same breed who is registered with AKC, then the litter of pups can be registered with AKC as well. So, you still need to do your research to verify the QUALITY of the dog you are getting. Go to the AKC website and click on BREEDS (www.akc.org). Look up American Cocker Spa Debbie
