What are the known health problems of this breed and the treatment for them, how common are these problems? I heard they have teeth problems of some sort, does regular cleaning help and how to clean?

7/8/08 Chinese cresteds can lead long, health, active lives. Health problems depend on the pedigree and how well you know what is in the pedigree. Things we test for is PRA or progressive retinal atrophy which can cause a dog to go blind. A responsible breeder will CERF test each dog yearly to check the eyes. PRCD-PRA is a new genetic test that checks for an early onset form of PRA. There are health databases that keep track of the numbers of affecteds, carriers or clears and I believe has a running count. As with all things, you have to know where to look to find it. OFA or Orthopedic Foundation for Animals is a good site to start with. PRA is not the only health concern nor is it the largest. There can also be LCP, closed ear canal, food allergies, patella problems, lens luxation and glacoma. But these are only a very infrequent occurrance as the breed is fairly healthy as a whole.
