Mail boxer 8rys old has hernia, how critical is this to fix. One vet said it would cost $1,200 to fix. That seems like a lot of $$$

3/15/05 Hi there, you don't say where the hernia is, or which type it is. There are a few different types of hernia, and without knowing which one it is, its difficult to give advice. A hernia which can be pushed back into the abdomen is called "reducible". Hernias which are not "reducible" are called "incarcerated". If the blood supply to an "incarcerated" hernia is pinched off, the hernia becomes "strangulated". A "strangulated" hernia is an emergency and you must consult your Vet immediately. Other types of hernia are "Umbilical" - found in puppies "Inguinal" - the result of abdominal organs, fat or tissue protruding through the inguinal ring. Inguinal hernias are presented as skin-covered bulges in the groin. "Diaphragmatic" - the result of a tear in the diaphragm which allows abdominal organ portions to pass into the chest area. As to the cost of having it fixed...I have no idea, but what value do you hold on the wellbeing of your Boxer??? If neccesary ask for a second Lorraine
